Skýra Journal

Letters from the North

Welcome to our journal. This is where we write down what moves us: the seasons shifting, traditions worth keeping, the slow work of building something enduring in Lapland. Collected here are the voices of Skýra: the makers, the keepers, the wanderers. Each entry a fragment of the Lapland that has shaped us and will continue to do so.

  • Published 3/10/2026 On Not Chasing the Northern Lights In recent years, Lapland has become a destination of global fascination. Christmas stories, snowy “winter wonderland” imagery, and the promise of the Northern Lights have drawn record numbers of visitors. Finnish Lapland is now receiving more travelers than ever, the result of decades of patient work by local industry pioneers and professionals. Rovaniemi, a town of just 65,000 residents, expects nearly one million visitors this winter between November and March. Year after year the city opens its arms to people eager to witness what they have seen on screens and been promised in stories
  • Published 9/4/2025 Why we don’t chase the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights are among the most exquisite natural phenomena our planet holds. They awaken awe and remind us of our smallness. Their dance feels celestial, and standing beneath them roots you in the present moment. People journey thousands of kilometers, boarding flights, trains, and buses to the Arctic in the hope of witnessing the aurora themselves — and for good reason.
